Zero ozone-depleting fire-protection fluid

3M’s Novec 1230 fire-protection fluid is a next-generation halon replacement that balances concerns for human safety, performance, and the environment. Novec 1230 has a zero ozone-depletion potential, an atmospheric lifetime of just five days, and a global warming potential of one.

The fluid can be applied in streaming, total-flooding, inerting, and explosion-suppression applications. It is ideal for special-hazard places where maintaining the operation of high-value equipment is critical. Examples include data-processing and control rooms, telecommunications, marine applications, oil-and-gas applications, strategic military facilities, archives, and museums.

Described as a kind of “dry water,” Novec 1230 fluid is stored as a liquid but works as a gas and leaves no messy residue to clean up, allowing systems to remain operational. To demonstrate its effectiveness, 3M has submerged electronic devices in the waterlike substance with no harm to their operations. The nonconductive, noncorrosive, and fast-evaporating fluid is commercially available globally and is suitable for use in occupied spaces.
