Leather products made from fruit waste
A company in Rotterdam has developed a way to achieve the same tactile qualities of leather without having to kill an animal for it. The company realized that every day, thousands of pounds of unsold and/or rotten food is thrown away from the markets in and near Rotterdam. These fruits, often inedible, can find new life through a process of mashing and drying—converting this waste into a fruit-leather.
The leather has a variety of commercial applications—from leather handbags to shoes. In addition to replacing traditionally leather objects, the new material could replace plastic packaging as well. Fruit leather is an incredible story of repurposing generic waste into a new material that can reduce demand on more energy-intensive materials.
