Glass shelving with conical wood supports

Toyo Ito’s Sendai shelf sculpture is highly reminiscent of his architectural tour de force by the same name. Like the Sendai Mediatheque, the structural elements of the shelf are comprised of conical sections of varying diameters, rising up through glass planes like abstracted bamboo or seaweed. Unlike the Mediatheque, however, these vertical elements are solid, slender trunks of various types of wood. The wood planes that are laminated and sculpted into conical forms are all oriented vertically, lending a strong vertical grain and eerie lightness to the work. The glass is printed, drilled, sanded, painted, and tempered.
