Sensing surface for interactive applications

Sensetable is a hardware platform for creating an interactive digital experience on a tabletop surface. It senses the movements of objects on its surface and uses these movements to control a computer. A variety of interactive applications have been developed for the Sensetable such as Audiopad, a new type of music DJ system, and the Reactions Table, a science museum exhibit about the periodic table of the elements. Objects on the tabletop become the interface to custom computer software. For example, in the Audiopad system, each object on the table represents a piece of sound. One moves these objects on the table to control the various parameters of musical synthesis.

Patten Studio offers custom software development for the Sensetable, and an open source software development kit is available. A standard Sensetable antenna panel measures 24 cm by 37 cm, and these panels can be tiled to create an interactive surface of the desired size. The antenna panels can be built into a variety of surfaces for permanent use, or placed on top of any ordinary tabletop.
