Sound responsive wood planks

The PLANKS are the result of collaboration between artist Henrik Menné and scientist Anna Vallgårda as an exploration into the aesthetic potential of computational composites. Comprised of wood boards and electronic circuitry on a supporting frame, PLANKS responds to local stimuli as an experiment in animating architectural enclosures.

When the sonic activity near a PLANK rises above a certain threshold, the board will gradually bend outward; as the room grows quiet again, the PLANK will gradually straighten out. In this way, PLANKS collectively will cause a room to “shrink” as the sonic activity rises and “expand” as it falls. Each PLANK works individually with adjustable sensitivity and expression, and the combination of multiple PLANKS conveys an emergent, lifelike sensibility.
