3D washi parchment

Washi architectural parchment has been made for over 500 years in Japan by experienced artisan families. Washi is made from the elongated fibers of the mulberry plant, without the addition of chemicals. A few washi-producing families remain despite the forces of industrialization, and Precious Pieces has been identifying and developing contemporary applications for this particular material tradition.

One such application is Orb, a three-dimentional washi parchment lamp shade. Orb is especially notable given its lack of frames or supports, and its seamless spherical form belies the mark of its fabrication. 100% natural and handmade, Orb represents an intriguing modernization of a centuries-old craft.
