Configurable wood veneer curtain

In-Out Curtain is a prototype design for an operable screen that can be manipulated to change shape in section as well as in plan. Made from thin wood veneer or paper, it is conceived as a hybrid drape/Venetian blind that may function either as a window covering or a transformable room partition.

The curtain is comprised of cut, perforated, folded, and interlocked laser-cut modules. The modules are each designed with internal tensions so that they hold two distinct shapes, a closed/concave shape, and an open/convex one. The modules, when linked together, translate their individual deformation onto adjacent areas creating a curtain of multiple shape variation. The overall pattern is algorithmically derived, based on room location and/or light direction.

Each curtain can have a unique form and may be altered continuously by hand. In-Out Curtain explores relationships between the specificity and precision of digital fabrication and the ability of the user to alter the end product at will.
