Kinetic projection surface

Hyper-Matrix is a kinetic landscape composed of walls of moving blocks. Created for the Hyundai Motor Group Exhibition Pavilion at the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, South Korea, Hyper-Matrix consists of thousands of 12 5/8″ x 12 5/8″ (320 x 320 mm) white foam cubes connected to stepper motors within a large steel frame. Actuators adjust the relative depth of each cube, creating patterns across the three-sided display.

Composed of what at first appear to be three blank white walls, the Hyper-Matrix installation quickly comes to life as thousands of individual modules begin to move, pulsate, and form dynamic images across the room. The modules are densely packed, with only 0.2″-wide (5-mm) interstitial spaces, so the surfaces also function well as projection screens. Digital content projected on the walls coordinates with the cubes’ movement.
